Hunters Should Be Aware of CWD Regulations

RALEIGH, N.C. – The N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission is asking those who hunt in other states to help prevent chronic wasting disease (CWD) from infiltrating North Carolina’s deer population. Currently, there is no known incidence of CWD in North Carolina, but it can be imported. Hunters harvesting deer, elk, or moose from states or provinces with CWD should be aware that there are restrictions on carcass parts that can be imported into North Carolina. Three Deer, Two Bucks

WATERBURY, VT - Vermont hunters may once again take up to three deer in a calendar year with appropriate licenses and permits, which will allow them more hunting opportunity. The annual limit may be achieved in any combination of seasons (Archery, Youth Weekend, November Rifle Season, December Muzzleloader), but only two may be legal bucks, and only one buck is allowed per season. All three deer in the annual bag limit may be antlerless deer. A legal buck is defined as having one antler with two or more points one inch or longer. Spike-antlered bucks are allowed during Youth Weekend for management purposes. Pennsylvania Antlerless Permits

HARRISBURG – Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 3B and 5C have exhausted their entire antlerless deer license allocations today, announced Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe. WMU 3B covers portions of Bradford, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Tioga and Wyoming counties. WMU 5C covers portions of Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Northampton and Montgomery counties. Of the 849,000 antlerless licenses originally allocated, agency employees have distributed to county treasurers 785,117 applications. Following are the only WMUs with remaining antlerless deer licenses as of today (along with the initial allocation for each WMU): WMU 2A, 11,228 (55,000); WMU 2B, 41,153 (68,000); and WMU 5D, 11,502 (22,000). Prairie Smoke Dunes Deer Hunt

Deer hunters have a new opportunity this fall in Norman County. The Prairie Smoke Dunes State Scientific and Natural Area (SNA), which has only been open to occasional special management hunts in the past, is now open for all regular 2008 deer seasons including early antlerless. The 1,280-acre SNA, located about five miles south of Fertile, lies within deer permit area 265, an intensive deer area. During the regular seasons, a hunter may bag up to five deer, using any combination of valid licenses or permits, and up to two additional deer during the early anterless season. Pennsylvania Elk Guide Permit Deadline

HARRISBURG – Anyone interested in applying to be an elk guide for the upcoming November elk hunt should submit a completed application to the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Bureau of Wildlife Protection by Friday, Oct. 10. Elk guide permits cost $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents. Guides may provide assistance in locating or tracking elk, but may not harvest an elk. Permit applications may be obtained from the Game Commission’s Harrisburg headquarters by calling 717-787-5740. The Board of Game Commissioners created the elk guide permit to allow experienced individuals, especially those who live in the elk range or are familiar with the elk herd, to serve as guides for those who receive an elk license.
