CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire's preliminary estimated 2008 hunter harvest of 10,945 deer represents an excellent year for the state's deer hunters and is reflective of a healthy deer population. This year's total was about 19% below the final deer kill for the 2007 season, which was the second highest in New Hampshire's history, only exceeded in 1967 when 14,204 deer were taken. The deer hunting season closed in the state on December 15, the final day of archery deer season. "The expected decrease in the 2008 harvest is the result of several factors," said Kent Gustafson, Deer Project Leader at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. "The long, severe winter of 2007-08 reduced deer numbers in much of the state, and in response to that winter, either-sex hunting days ... Annapolis, Md. - Maryland deer hunters continued a successful 2008 - 2009 deer season with an unofficial harvest of 44,802 deer during the recent two-week firearm season. The harvest represents a very slight decline compared to last years official harvest of 44,913 deer for the same period. The antlered harvest of 15,695 deer (474 sika deer) was down 2 percent compared to 16,018 antlered deer (443 sika deer) taken last year. This years antlerless harvest of 29,107 deer (570 sika deer) was a 1 percent increase over the 28,787 deer (493 sika deer) taken last year. JEFFERSON CITY — Hunters checked 15,036 deer during the Antlerless Portion of Firearms Deer Season Dec. 13 through 21. That is down by almost 23 percent from last year (19,472). High winds, very cold weather conditions and considerable ice in many of Missouri’s northern counties took a toll on this year’s antlerless harvest numbers. In addition, there were six fewer counties open during this year’s Antlerless Portion. High counties during the 2008 Antlerless Portion were the same as in 2007. Hunters checked 527 deer in Macon County, 468 in Pike and 415 in Callaway. When added to the harvests during the Urban Portion of Firearms Deer Season (678), the November Youth Portion (10,400), the November Portion (200,679) and the Muzzleloader Portion (10,254), the Antlerless Portion harvest brings the 2008-2009 ... At the peak of the busy holiday season, food banks across the state are getting some much needed help from deer hunters. Food banks have benefited from donations received by hunters through the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program for the past 15 years. Just last year, nearly 29,000 pounds of venison - a weight equivalent to 143,00 meals - were collected, processed and distributed to food banks across the state. As the holiday season continues, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division reminds hunters that opportunities to donate are still available now through Jan. 15. “The Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program is one opportunity for hunters to demonstrate their generosity by sharing their harvest with those in need,” says John Bowers, Wildlife Resources Division assistant chief of Game Management. ...
